SYNOPSIS
Çamburnu, a small mountain village in northeastern Turkey, has long thrived on tea cultivation and fishing, thanks to the Black Sea’s mild climate. This harmony is shattered when the government builds a landfill above the village, despite protests. The poorly constructed site leads to air and water pollution, landslides of waste, and thedestruction of local livelihoods.Award-winning filmmaker Fatih Akin (Head-On, Crossing the Bridge –The Sound of Istanbul) arrives in 2006 to shoot The Edge of Heavenin his grandparents’ village. Upon discovering the environmental crisis, he documents the villagers’ six-year fight against powerful institutions. Polluting Paradiseis both a striking portrait of rural Turkish society and a call for civil courage.
