About

Dorje is a Tibetan word referring to a small scepter held in the right hand by Tibetan lamas during religious ceremonies. This ritual instrument symbolically takes the shape of a diamond, representing the “lightning of enlightenment,” the firmness of the spirit, and the spiritual power that suddenly bursts into human consciousness.

Dorje Film was founded in November 2004 in Rome by Alberto Fanni, Paolo Colombo and Flaminio Zadra, with the aim of supporting the development and production of independent projects, both Italian and international.

Since 2004, Dorje Film has enjoyed an exclusive partnership with director Fatih Akin. As a result of this valuable collaboration, many critically acclaimed films have been produced, such as Crossing the Bridge, The Edge of Heaven (Best Screenplay Award, Cannes Film Festival 2007), Soul Kitchen (Jury Prize, Venice Film Festival 2009), The Cut (2014), and In the Fade (Golden Globe, 2018).

Dorje Film has supported and developed the debut of many young directors, including Özer Kiziltan (Takva, 2006), Özgür Yildirim (Chiko, 2008), Miraz Bezar (The Children of Diyarbakir, 2009), and Kohki Hasei (Blanka, 2015).

Furthermore, Dorje Film has participated in the production of numerous non-profit audiovisual projects to promote human rights worldwide.

In 2008, Dorje Film, in collaboration with the NGO Art for The World (Geneva), produced a collection of 23 short films titled Stories on Human Rights, created on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Among the directors were Walter Salles, Daniela Thomas, Sergei Bodrov, Murali Nair, Idrissa Ouédraogo, Shira Geffen, Etgar Keret, Abderrahmane Sissako, Pablo Trapero, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Zhang Ke Jia, Hany Abu-Assad, and Jasmila Zbanic.

In 2010,  as part of a cultural integration campaign promoted by the UN, Dorje Film co-produced the short films The Accordion by Jafar Panahi and Chimeres Absentes by Fanny Ardant.

In 2021, Dorje Film competed at the 74th Cannes Film Festival with the latest film from award-winning Hungarian director Ildiko Enyedi, The Story of My Wife, a co-production involving Hungary, Germany, and Italy, which was released in Italian cinemas in April 2022.

Dorje Film has recently completed the new film by award-winning American director Joshua Oppenheimer. The End is an ambitious project co-produced with Denmark, Germany, Ireland, and Italy, shot in early 2023.

In September 2023, the company was present at the Venice Film Festival in competition with the film Aicha by Mehdi M. Barsaoui, in the Orizzonti category.
